AI Collaborative: Wildfires (AIC:W)

The AI Collaborative: Wildfires (AIC:W) is a global, cross-sector program catalyzed by Google.org that brings together leading nonprofits, academic institutions, government agencies, and technology organizations to harness advances in AI to transform how the world prepares for, detects, and manages wildfires.

At its core, the AIC:W functions as a coordinated innovation and implementation ecosystem, aligning funding, science, technology, and on-the-ground expertise to accelerate and scale solutions that would not be possible independently.

A Program for System-Level Change

Wildfires are increasing in frequency, intensity, and complexity, driven by climate change, land-use shifts, and growing exposure of communities and infrastructure. Addressing this challenge requires more than isolated tools or research- it requires integrated systems that connect data, models, and decisions across the wildfire lifecycle.

The AIC:W operates as a programmatic platform to:

Coordinate investment
Coordinate investment across complementary efforts
technical development
Align technical development with real-world operational needs
interoperability
Enable interoperability between datasets, models, and tools
partnerships icon
Translate innovation into practice through partnerships with end users

Through this approach, the Collaborative is building the foundations for a next-generation wildfire intelligence ecosystem, one that is AI-enabled, globally connected, and decision-driven.

From Data to Decisions: An End-to-End Approach

The AIC:W advances a unified pipeline that spans the full wildfire lifecycle from early detection and risk assessment to response and long-term resilience.

This includes:

Near-real-time wildfire detection satellite
Near-real-time wildfire detection and tracking, enabled by emerging satellite constellations and AI-driven data processing
Earth observation
Improved quantification of wildfire risk, integrating Earth observation, fuels data, and climate inputs
fire behavior modeling
Advances in fire behavior modeling, incorporating AI-enhanced inputs and improved simulation capabilities
Decision-support tools
Decision-support tools that translate complex data into actionable insights for fire managers, policymakers, and communities
beneficial fire practices icon
Expanded use of beneficial fire practices, supporting proactive land management and risk reduction

Program Structure: Four Integrated Workstreams

The AIC:W is organized into four interconnected workstreams that function as the program’s technical and coordination backbone:
WS1: Virtual Constellation

Workstream 1: Earth Observation Systems

Near-real-time wildfire detection and tracking, enabled by emerging satellite constellations and AI-driven data processing
WS2: Fire Behavior Models

Workstream 2: Fire Behavior Modeling

Near-real-time wildfire detection and tracking, enabled by emerging satellite constellations and AI-driven data processing
Workstream 3: Decision-Support Tools

Workstream 3: Decision-Support Tools

Translating data and models into accessible, user-centered tools that support operational decision-making across agencies, communities, and sectors.
Workstream 4: Ecosystem Coordination & Scaling

Workstream 4: Ecosystem Coordination & Scaling

Translating data and models into accessible, user-centered tools that support operational decision-making across agencies, communities, and sectors.
This structure enables the program to simultaneously advance technical innovation, operational adoption, and system-level coordination.
