SIG-NAL collaborated with Rio Grande Return, The Water Foundation and Thornburg Foundation on a phased effort to expand the use of Nature-Based Solutions across New Mexico. Phase 1 completed a statewide analysis of more than 50 programs across 14 agencies to identify policy, funding, planning, and capacity barriers and opportunities for integrating Nature-Based Solutions into water management, restoration, infrastructure, and other state investments. The work resulted in a set of phased recommendations for state agencies, the Legislature, and non-governmental organizations, along with educational materials for decision-makers.
Phase 2 is putting those findings into action through targeted outreach and education with agency leadership, program staff, legislators, local governments, and other partners. The project is working to build shared understanding, address implementation barriers, and advance practical changes to policies, program guidance, planning, and funding systems so that Nature-Based Solutions are consistently considered and more widely implemented across New Mexico. This phase of work is funded by The Water Foundation.
