Jefferson Stormwater Bumpouts

Jefferson Stormwater Bumpouts

Jefferson Stormwater Bumpouts project

About the Project

The Jefferson GSI Bump Outs project originated as a case-study selected by the City of Albuquerque’s GSI Cohort, following their participation in a GSI Accelerator program. The goal of this program, and as a result the goal of the Jefferson GSI project, was to educate municipal staff about GSI best practices, to identify and address systemic barriers, and to ultimately catalyze the largest municipality in New Mexico to advance their approach to GSI implementation.

Project Team and Collaboration

The GSI Cohort represents more than 9 departments across the City who are working together for the first time to establish new internal processes for GSI on public right-of-way.

Why the Jefferson Site Was Selected

The project team selected the Jefferson site because it already had curb cuts to allow stormwater into the 2 southern bump-outs at the intersection of Central Ave and Jefferson Ave in Albuquerque. The goal was to engage the GSI Cohort in the process to re-design the sites so that it became an example of successful GSI, rather than an example of what not to do.

Project Outcomes and Benefits

In addition to resulting in direct improvements to the street-side features that enhance water quality, green space and provide other community benefits, this project contributed to the City’s goal to create new inter-departmental processes for GSI projects on their property.

Building Internal Capacity

Furthermore, this project built internal capacity for high-quality GSI implementation by providing City planning personnel a rare chance to gain hand-on experience through participation in the assessment, design, approval process and installation of the Jefferson Bump-Outs.
